Journeys

The New York City Master Chorale is proud to conclude its third season with the most momentous concert in its history. Journeys celebrates the reopening of the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center with an afternoon of musical awakening and discovery, on Sunday May 31st at 3 pm.

Join us as we perform legendary composer Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, a moving choral mass in Hebrew, in honor of the 90th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Alternating in its intricacy and austerity, Bernstein’s Psalms offer an exquisite narrative of humanity from its elemental beginnings, through struggle and searching, to a destiny of peace and unity. The Chorale will pair Bernstein’s landmark piece with Tarik O’Regan’s Dorchester Canticles, a two-movement evensong, written specifically to partner with Chichester Psalms’ orchestration.

Completing the evening will be the exciting World Premiere of the new work, The Journey, by composer Aaron Fruchtman. This epic four-movement piece based on the actual journals of Oregon Trail pioneers was written expressly for the NYCMC. Narrated by Oscar®-nominated actor Bruce Dern, The Journey follows the pioneers through the perilous landscape of the American Frontier to their joyous arrival at the Pacific Ocean.

Don’t miss this watershed celebration with the reopening of Alice Tully Hall, Bernstein’s 90th birthday, and the world premiere of The Journey in this 50th Anniversary year of Lincoln Center.
